Mammen Wolf tattoo
This Mammen wolf tattoo is for my client from the USA. I made it in Norse tattoo style in the freehand technique. Here you can see an example of simple Viking wolf tattoo.
As you could note, this tattoo isn’t really big but I love its simplicity. You can see each clear line without excess which can disturb to perception of the design of the wolf tattoo.
I adore using different shades of black colour to create deeper contrast. Here you can see the whole range from white to the blackest. It makes the picture deeper and more voluminous when you look at it.
There are classical geometric patterns widely popular in Viking jewellery of the early medieval period in this wolf tattoo. Wolf is a really popular plot of Viking tattoo. Why is it so?
The reason is that there is Fenrir the Wolf, a son of Loki and giantess Angrboda. He is an important part of Norse mythology.
Fenrir as a child of giantess had being growing extremely fast and it bothered the gods. Besides, according to the Poetic Edda, Fenrir was foretold to kill Odin while the Ragnarok. The gods knew all the existing prophecies and they decided to bond Fenrir to stop his rapid growth and to interfere this prophecy of Ragnarok to come true. As a result Fenrir bit off the right hand of the god Týr. After all this prophecy never came true and Odin’s son Vidar killed Fenrir.
That’s why depictions of Fenrir have been identified on various objects and scholarly theories have been proposed regarding Fenrir’s relation to other canine beings in Norse mythology. Fenrir has been the subject of artistic depictions and he appears in literature. Fenrir the Wolf as wolfs in general made wolf tattoo a very popular sort of Norse ornamental tattoo.
